Other Characters: Sylvanas Windrunner
Character Name: Rogue (Anna Marie)
Series: Marvel Comics
Age: Oh the ambiguousness that is Marvel! She’s somewhere in her twenties.
From When?: Uncanny Avengers #1, prior to the funeral
Inmate/Warden: Warden. If anyone knows about redemption and life changing choices, it‘s Rogue. She has lived on both sides of the line, hero and villain. She knows what it is like to fall far and then have to climb your way up again. And she knows that it’s not a quick and easy fix. Rogue also has a very unique ability to actually know exactly how someone else is thinking and feeling, what motivates them. If they allow her to, that is. In any case, she’s empathetic without being a pushover, and won’t tolerate any bs.
Item: A Jack of Hearts playing card.
Abilities/Powers:
She has excellent combat skills and a remarkable agility, even outside her mutant powers. She displays these skills often, as she has entered multiple large scale battles with nothing more than just her costume and her fists. She has also been pitted against Wolverine while de-powered completely in a survival of the fittest scenario, in which she out strategized him, and lured him into a trap that would have resulted in his (theoretical) death.
Her mutant power is the ability to absorb the power (if a mutant or other super powered being), and psyche’s of others through skin to skin contact. Her powers will drain those she touches for a period of time, usually on a 1/60 ratio. She is in full control of these powers now, but it is still an unpleasant experience for those she touches for long periods. She can choose what she takes from people, and can limit it to only borrowing a portion of their powers. She can also use her powers the way she used to, and drain literally everything a person has in them, rendering them unconscious for the duration of her possessing their abilities and skills.
This can lead to residue of other people's psyche's being stored in her mind. Currently, she has her mind well organized and doesn't have the issue of losing herself to the voices that once threatened her. However, if she uses her powers the way they originally worked on someone with a very powerful personality, like someone who is violently insane, or extremely angry like The Hulk, that personality can threaten to overwhelm her own. She has demonstrated that she can control it, but it does take effort to do so until the personality fades to being just the residue.
Personality:
Rogue has spent most of her life defining herself by her most prominent issue: her mutant power. In the beginning, she was rather devil-may-care with it, and that led to rather terrible results. She literally thought she was going to go insane from all the personalities inside her head. And becoming less cavalier and more responsible was a very harsh lesson to learn.
To that end she has been very guarded with herself. She never could experience the simple casual intimacies that everyone around her could, and conditioned herself to never expect to do so outside of a combat situation, with a few small exceptions. So now, with her powers at last under her control, her world is suddenly vastly expanded. This is both an elation and a terrifying thing.
For a long time, she was very deeply frightened that at any time, she might lose control of herself. Her reason for her lack of control initially had been a mental block; a psychological issue. Now that such a barrier has been removed, her fear is that she will succumb to her powers because of her own weaknesses as an individual.
Rogue has grown a lot. She has worked through her fears of falling back into old habits, and of losing herself if she has to let loose. She has slowly come to making actual decisions about her life. After being dumped for her own good by Remy LeBeau (her long time on again, off again flame), Rogue entered into a sort of relationship with Magneto. She was attracted to him physically, but he has done rather horrible things in the past that are a large turn off for her romantically. He had been pursuing her rather doggedly, and making his intentions very transparent. While she continually shot down his advances, she still continued to give him subtle mixed signals. Eventually, she gave in to her desire and began a sexual and romantic relationship with him, though neither of them gave what they had a label. It was a way of her exploring what she wanted, but avoiding making a real decision on it.
Eventually, Rogue was forced to make a personal choice about what direction she wanted her life to go, and she chose a different path than her at the time lover. Without even saying goodbye, she crossed the country and didn’t hardly speak to Magneto at all until after the end of the AVX storyline.
At this point, she was forced to confront what she wanted, and she came to a realization about herself. Magneto was her easy way out. He offered a relationship where she had no responsibility, because he would be calling all the shots. He would shoulder all her burdens, because that is who he is. He would never truly want her to stand on her own feet. After realizing this, she pseudo-amicably parted ways with him.
Currently, she is single and not having a problem with it. She has decided to just be who she wants to be, and not who others may expect her to be.
Her long experience has led her to take on a guiding role for the young generation of mutants. She offers a level of understanding of the difficulties of growing up being so exceptionally different. For others, she is patient and understanding. Though this is not an endless thing. She does have a temper and it can be rather easily pricked.
Violence is not something she shirks from, obviously. But also in minor domestic areas, her anger can lead her to being violent with people on her own team. Usually this requires someone to offend her hugely, or put someone’s life at unnecessary risk.
She has a sassy sense of humor as well. Because the life of an X-Man requires you must be able to find the funny when you can. She has been known to flirt, but rarely does it get very serious. (See Gambit and Magneto) She is also a lot smarter than people often guess her to be, she is well versed in different cultures and beliefs, and is able to quote prominent figures of history and literature. She is also a very good tactician, able to think on her feet and adapt to changing scenarios.
On another important note, Rogue has a very special place in her heart for Remy LeBeau. Despite whether or not they are in a relationship, Remy has a profound influence over Rogue. She is very obviously still in love with him, and has stated that he is her best friend. She has more than once shown that because of her feelings for him, she sets him as a high priority in her life.
Barge Reactions:
This won’t affect Rogue hardly at all. She’s been to different planets and dimensions on a regular basis. And the variety of folks won’t even make her blink. Being altered by floods and breaches probably won’t make her too happy though. She’s not a big fan of having her personality superseded.
History:
Here and Here
Sample Journal Entry:
[The new face belongs to an attractive young woman, whose most striking feature is the white bangs framing her face that stand out against the long chestnut hair. She smiles warmly.]
Well, Ah figure Ah ought make a formal greetin’, so hello everyone. Mah name’s Rogue, an’ Ah’m here as a Warden.
Not ta be complainin’ after Ah just got here, but the gym here is a little bit… less than what Ah’m used at back home. If anyone’s interested, Ah’d like ta pick up a sparrin’ partner or two. Just lemme know, Ah’d really appreciate it.
[She reaches out to turn off the feed, then pauses a second.]
Not you, Wade.
Sample RP:
This place was almost eerily mellow. Well, in comparison to what she was used to. Oh sure, the little pops of weirdness broke up the monotony, but really on the whole, the place was really quiet. She’d figured with so many people in need of redemption, the Barge would be a lot more chaotic. Not that she was complaining mind. It just wasn’t what she’d prepared for. But hey, she’d gladly take a break from the end of the world scenarios and just do a little one on one rehab.
So yeah, she heard a lot of the folks on the opposite side of the program complaining that things weren’t tough enough. She’d thought about putting in her two cents. She’d been imprisoned a few times. And every last one of them came with really, really bad memories. But telling her sob stories wouldn’t really do much good on a wide audience. Saying she’d had it worse and they should be grateful for what they had would just come off as arrogant and patronizing. In her opinion, those stories were for one on one moments, when they could have the most impact. They were also a little to painful to just flippantly toss out at people. But hey, some Wardens and even Inmates thought that was the way to go. Who was she to say they were wrong. She’d just keep doing her thing her way.
She just hoped that whoever she ended up getting partnered up with could benefit from her experiences. She’d dealt with a lot of stuff in her own past, and she felt she was in a pretty good place for it finally. And on the whole, the kids back home seemed to take what she had to say in stride. Of course, the people here weren’t all kids, and she had zero benefit of her reputation with them. But that wasn’t a huge hill. After all, she’d managed to stop a world war on a planet in a different galaxy some months back, and those guys hadn’t even heard of Earth.
Special Notes:
Rogue speaks with a southern accent. I will do the best I can with it to keep it coherent. For quick reference, contraction words will generally still be written the same (I.e. you’re), while single words will be modified as needed (I.e. your = yer). Words ending in “ing” will have the g removed and an apostrophe. However words like “thing” will NOT be written as “thang”, though her “I”s are pronounced as “Ah”s. Her dialect flavors her speech, it does not make it unintelligible. “You”s will be treated individually for appropriate sound and syllabic stress points.
