Back home Ah work at a school. [In between averting Earth shattering disasters and fighting the good fight for equality, which sadly involves actual fighting. But that is not the point of this.] We teach all the basics, but we also cater to a very special group of people, mutants. Folks born with powers that set them apart on the evolutionary charts. A lot of those people don't really know what ta do with the gifts they're born with, or how ta control them.

That was mah area of focus. Ah've been teachin' young mutants how ta get a handle on their gifts for a long while. Ah'm able ta do it a lot more effectively than most, because Ah can share their power for a while, get an idea of what they're livin' with, and how it works. How it's supposed ta work.

And Ah know we've got some folks here that have powers like that. Gifts they don't quite know how ta work completely. Ah'd like ta offer mah help. Ah know we've got a little school here for further education, so Ah'm wonderin' if Ah might take up a teachin' spot for this sort of thing.

It'd be a one on one learnin' basis. Anyone interested, we could work out days and times for lessons.

Anyway, it's an idea.

Like Ah said, sometimes Ah run across powers that are a little outta mah league, but practice makes perfect.

Yes, it's a drain. Ah can syphon off some of it, or Ah can take the whole thing in one shot. Not exactly fun t'do it that way though. For anyone.

And that's it? You take it and they don't get it back again?

No, no. It's a temporary transfer.....

Most times.

You don't get it permanently?

Not usually. It's happened before. Twice. Ah didn't have control of mah powers back then.

But you learned to control them.

Took me a while, but yeah.

[And she's still trying to figure out how she relates to the physical world now. Still wears gloves more than she doesn't. Still falls into patterns of not casually touching other people, even though she can, even though she wants to so much sometimes, her skin tingles.]

Did it bother you, before?

Well, it dictated how Ah could live mah life. Ah couldn't touch anyone without takin' away what made them uniquely themselves. And the only part of them that didn't fade away was the personalities that came with the transfer. Ah had a head full of people, and it almost drove me insane.

...how'd you deal with that? [He's lucky enough to only have himself in his mind. Voices of people past and present as well, of course, but only as ideas. But a few people he knows - River, Audrey - aren't quite so fortunate.]

Once it was like a war zone in mah head. Ah was always fightin' ta keep control of mah own mind. Some of the personalities in mah head weren't friendly, but some were. Those helped me keep in control.

Now, Ah've got a lot of practice organizing the mess. Everythin' in it's place. Well... almost. It got knocked all ta hell a few months back by an Inmate. But Ah've almost got it all set t'rights again.

Wow. Most people where I come from can't control their Troubles, like I said, especially not big ones like that. You know, I know a town where you could make a killing as a teacher.

Why do ya call 'em "Troubles"?

Because no one wants one of these.

What are they like?

Difficult. Powerful. Sometimes uncontrollable - most people's Troubles are automatic, some people can learn to keep them in check.

Sometimes they're called Curses. They seem to be magic, and they affect specific families. Have for centuries.

Ah, okay. That makes a little more sense.

Ah'd have ta probably vet each person's..."Trouble" individually before Ah could see if Ah'd be able ta help.

They're varied. Like abilities in your world, sounds like, but less useful.

Well, that's still a little on the vague side of things, but Ah'm thinkin' you're actually here cuz of a specific one.

My inmate's got an ability. Weird ability. ...Disability.

Ah'm listenin'.

She's psychically sensitive. Too sensitive. It overwhelms her, and she's having a lot of problems trying to block it out.

She's talking to Jean about it, but I could use some suggestions.

Actually, Jean is one of the best psychics Ah know. And when it comes to straight psychic ability, learnin' from a professional is the way ta go. But Ah can confer with her about yer gal if ya like.
